PIONEER is a research project investigating how people can make truly informed, self-determined decisions about their personal data in everyday digital life. We put that research into practice with Privacy Buddy — a mobile privacy companion that combines knowledge, motivation and guidance tailored to different user groups.
The project
Retaining control over personal data is one of the key challenges of our time. Legislation such as the GDPR relies on the idea of "informed consent", yet in practice people are rarely able — or motivated — to work through long privacy notices and cookie banners. PIONEER researches a way to change that, and puts it into practice with Privacy Buddy.
The app: Privacy Buddy
Privacy Buddy brings the project's research into a single mobile companion: short knowledge lessons, motivational elements that help privacy-aware habits stick, and guidance tailored to different user groups. On top of that, it analyses your installed apps and turns the results into clear, understandable reports on how they handle your data.
